Idris Elba has been heavily tipped for playing Bond after Daniel Craig hands over the baton. However, author of the latest Bond novel, Anthony Horowitz, has said that he isn’t right for the role.
Clearing up any misconceptions about his statement, Horowitz has made it clear that it isn’t an issue relating to colour:
Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better,” [Horowitz names Adrian Lester, star of Hustle as his preferred choice.]
For me Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.
Elba has made it clear that he would love to play Bond but, due to his age, 42, he said that it can’t happen. In April he told a crowd at the British Film Institute in London:
If there was ever a chance of me getting Bond, it’s gone.
Daniel Craig actually set the rumour off. About four years ago he said Idris Elba would be a great Bond and it started to creep. I blame Daniel.
Piers Brosnan has already given Idris his personal thumbs up for the role.
Radio Times asked him about whether he thought Idris would make a good Bond, he said: “Yeah, he would actually. Colin Salmon also.”
