Last Friday, a fight broke out in a Detroit courtroom as a father attacked the man who killed his three-year-old daughter.
Jasmine Gordon and boyfriend, Clifford Thomas, were hearing their sentencing for child abuse and involuntary manslaughter at the Detroit Court when father, Dwayne Smith punched Thomas in the head.
His daughter, Jamila, died in September 2014, after her mother Jasmine Gordon and Gordon’s husband Clifford Thomas took her to the hospital when she stopped breathing.
They claimed that she had hit her head and fallen unconscious. However, experts soon determined that Jamila’s bruises showed signs of abuse.
Gordon, 25, was sentenced to seven to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter alongside 14 to 25 years for first-degree child abuse. The sentences will be served at the same time. Whilst 34-year-old Thomas has been sentenced to six to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter and one to two years for resisting and obstructing a police officer.
Smith was present at the hearing so he could read a statement as a victim to the couple.
After the fight, Smith was thrown out of the courtroom. The judge decided not to hold him in contempt of court, and he was allowed to go free without any legal repercussions.
