The Wedding Haka That Brought The Bride To Tears Has Gone Viral

No matter how much us Brits pipe on about tea and crumpets, the Queen and Big Ben our cultural bits and bobs will never quite stand up to the Maori haka.

The tribal dance designed as a war crime to frighten opponents on the battleground has taken on a new life in recent years. First by the All Blacks rugby team, and now by the couple at their wedding reception.

At Aaliyah and Benjamin Armstrong’s wedding reception in Auckland, New Zealand, last weekend the couple were “blown away” when their wedding party burst into full haka. But it wasn’t, as many are claiming, Aaliyah’s family trying to warn him off, just a show of respect from Ben’s best man to the newlyweds.

Aaliyah told the BBC:

“Ben is a Maori, he is probably more Maori than I am… Because he has fair skin, some people have been saying on social media that ‘he’d better not hurt the bride’, but they’re actually his family.

I wasn’t planning on jumping in until one bridesmaid did,” said Ms Armstrong. “I felt the need to show love and respect back. I was really blown away”
