Just a couple of months before Neil Armstrong took one small step for mankind, a group of astronauts were sent to orbit the moon in a “dress rehearsal” for the upcoming landing.
Everything went smoothly, and – as we all know – man first walked on the moon in July of that year (1969). But now, almost 40 years later, NASA have uncovered lost – formerly classified – tapes that reveal the crew of ‘Apollo 10′ heard unexplained “music” while on the dark side of the moon.
The conversation between the astronauts – out of range of radio transmissions coming from Earth – was recorded, and they can be heard discussing the eerie noise.
According to TV series, ‘NASA’s Unexplained Files’, the three men on board indicated that it was unlike anything they’d heard before:
“It sounds like, you know, outer space-type music.
You hear that? That whistling sound? Whooooooooo!
Well, that sure is weird music!”
As Apollo 15 astronaut Al Woden said:
“The Apollo 10 crew was very used to the kind of noise that they should be hearing. Logic tells me that if there was something recorded on there, then there was something there.”
The series (which you can watch a clip from below) discusses possible explanations for this “music” (magnetic fields interfering with radio signals, for example), but for now, what they really heard remains a mystery.
